He became a licensed North Carolina and South Carolina commercial general contractor and real estate broker, working for one of South Carolina’s largest private homebuilders. After moving to Myrtle Beach in 2004, he joined the team at one of the area’s largest private developers and real estate companies, running land development. But he itched to go out on his own.
Before launching Sands with vice president David Wilkes in 2014, Joe started his own company to initially begin expanding into real estate development, and single family, commercial and multi-family construction.
Today, as president of Sands, Joe oversees all of Sands’ business development, construction, and strategic planning. Most recently, he was at the helm of developing several cottage apartment home villages on the Grand Strand – the first of its kind in the area. Joe believes in Sand’s firm foundation of honesty and integrity and plans to continue to grow the company with that mindset further throughout the Southeast.
He served as project manager for Winchester Land and Development to build four high-rise oceanfront resort projects, and led an eight-year development effort for Dock Street Communities, a large, mixed-use project within The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. David is known for his experience in project management – addressing problems and finding the solutions, creating new ideas and coming up with innovating ways to improve operations.
Here at Sands, David oversees land acquisitions, entitlement through the local municipality, product development, construction budgeting, negotiating construction contracts and financing, and ramping up marketing programs for the sale of multi- and single-family homes. He also ensures that the company adheres to its commitment to its reputation for integrity, honesty and quality workmanship. He also stays busy managing employees, sales and subcontractors.
Outside of Sands, David is involved as a member of the Coastal Carolinas Association of REALTORS®, Horry Georgetown Home Building Association, and The National Association of Homebuilders.
Holly joined Sands Companies in 2021 as Director of Asset Management. With more than 19 years of industry experience, Holly is responsible for the overall performance of the Multifamily property portfolio. She provides proforma projections, SE market knowledge, new construction lease-ups directives, budget preparation, and overall property operations directives. Prior to joining the team, Holly served as the Senior Vice President of Operations at RKW Residential. A University of Maryland graduate, Go Terps! New to the Myrtle Beach area, in her free time, with her husband and two dachshunds, Oscar and Lucy, on the beach
Originally from Knoxville, TN Mike moved to Myrtle Beach in 1986. Mike is a MBHS and University of SC at Coastal Carolina graduate and is a licensed CMA. He has over 27 years of accounting experience to include working for Canal Industries and as the Financial Controller for New South Lumber Company (now Canfor), Wyndham Vacation Resorts, and most recently at Capital Vacations. Mike has spent the past 15 years as the Controller for two large property management companies. In 2022, Mike joined Sands Companies as the Financial Controller and will oversee all the day to day accounting functions of Sands Companies, Sands Building Group, and the respective development and construction projects.
During Mike’s free time he likes to spend time together with his wife, son, and dog to include traveling, spending time at the beach and at Lake Marion. Mike is an avid outdoorsman and loves fishing, hunting, scuba diving, and enjoys watching college sports.
Melanie joined Sands Building Group in 2021 as the Office Manager. She brings with her 15 plus years of management experience along with knowledge and experience in all aspects of the human resources department. After moving from Michigan, she knew she wanted to continue to work in the construction industry and found Sands to be the caliber of company she was eager to join. Melanie manages the day-to-day office operations and is responsible for the implementation and development of the human resource standards for the company.
Melanie is thrilled to be living on the beach in the golf capital of the world. She enjoys her beach time with a delightful read and loves spending time with her granddaughter.
As Sand’s Building Group’s President of Construction, Nick is responsible for all aspects of our For-Sale and For-Rent Projects, including Pre-Construction, Project Buy-Out, Construction, Turnour to Asset Management and Warranty implementation.
With over three and a half decades of construction project leadership, Nick has led multi-million-dollar projects for companies such as the Walt Disney Companies, CBRE, Nike, as well as international firms such as Haseko, and Taisei Corporations. With this wealth of experience, Nick mentors and champions the next generation of industry leaders by instilling a deep seeded sense of responsibility and accountability throughout the process.
In addition to holding a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction management from Washington State University, Nick is a Certified Erosion/Sediment Control Lead, OSHA 30 Certified and is accredited through the Association of Construction Inspectors as a Project Manager and Project Inspector.
When away from the office and construction site(s), Nick enjoys sharing time with his children and grandchildren.
As the Director of Pre-Construction for Sands Building Group, Nathan spearheads all aspects of our preconstruction services, including budgeting constructability reviews, subcontractor solicitation, estimating, project buy-out, and contract negotiations, playing an instrumental role in developing and maintaining relationships with owners, investors, designers and all of our trade partners.
Nathan joined the Sands Team in 2015 after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina. Over the course of his decade-long tenure with Sands, Nathan has served as Purchasing Manager and Project Manager; providing him with the knowledge and expertise to incorporate key construction-related items and strategies into the pre-construction process.
Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, attending concerts, and spending quality time with his family.
Jeff is responsible for overseeing the performance of required final inspection services, working with customers and property management on warranty issues and concerns on all Single-Family and Multifamily projects. He directs staff to ensure all work is scheduled and completed in a timely and professional manner. Jeff joined Sands Building Group in 2019; prior to joining the team, Jeff spent 25 years building Log Homes in the mountains of North Carolina.
Outside of work, you will find Jeff spending time with his family, including his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who all call him “Big Papa.”
Shaun brings 17 years of financial and banking knowledge Sands Building Group. In 2018 Shaun joined as Assistant Controller. He is responsible for overseeing day to day accounting functions of Sands Building Group. Executing a variety of financial procedures, including month-end and year-end closing, tax returns and general ledger reviews.
Shaun is native to South Carolina. In his free time you will find him spending time with his wife and their furry animals.
