Homeowner Honey Do’s
We know how exciting it is to become a homeowner, but before you officially hang your hat in your new home, it’s important to take care of a few pre-move-in necessities. Which is why we’ve put together a checklist of the top to-dos that most homeowners overlook to guide you in the right direction of move-in ready.
Set Up Utilities
The basics of water, gas and electricity should be up and running before move-in, of course, so set something up with one of your local companies or transfer your account to your new address.
Change Your Locks
You may have the keys to your new home in-hand, but you can’t be sure who else has a set from the previous owner. For your family’s safety, change all the locks to your home.
Locate Your Circuit Breaker & Water Shutoff
To be ahead of the game in case of an emergency, know where your home’s circuit breaker and water shutoff valves are located and label each control.
Test Your HVAC
Although this test should be covered under your home inspection, it doesn’t hurt to also make sure for yourself that you heat and air conditioning are working properly and vents and air filters are clean.
Check Your Appliances
Check all kitchen appliances and washer/dryer for working condition and make sure you have all owner’s manuals and warranty information on-hand.
Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
It’s so important to make sure all detectors throughout your home are properly working, and either replaced or batteries replaced if needed.
Review Your Home
It’s a good idea to stay ahead of any potential problems by closely examining every square inch of your home for water leaks, cracks, open spaces and holes in the walls, floors, windows, doors and ceiling. You should even check the insulation in your attic.
Prepare for Emergencies
Now that you’re at a new address, make sure everyone knows local emergency service phone numbers. And make sure your family knows where your new first-aid kit is located.
Find out from neighbors or call local officials to find out which days garbage and recycling items are collected.
Change Your Address
It’s easy to set up forwarding services from your old address at the post office or online. Plus, don’t forget to update your address with your bank, job, driver’s license, insurance companies, car registration, credit cards and more.
